What's Luck Got To Do With It?

It's funny, I think I have a pretty odd relationship with luck. Before my husband, I was definitely one of those people who were considered to have "all the luck." I always managed to come out on top, even in a few of the scarier situations. I definitely felt like someone or something was watching out for me big time.

And then I met my husband. Boy, he has got to be one of the unluckiest people I have ever met in my life! He's right out of a sitcom. We joke that he must have been a horrible person in a past life, because karma seems to have it out for him. My favorite though is his saying. Similar to Murphy's law, but for my husband it's "Whatever can go wrong does go wrong, and whatever can't will still manage to go wrong somehow."

So what do you get when you mix together a very lucky girl with a tragically unlucky guy? You get some funny stories! And trust me, it's best to have a sense of humor about these things.

Take, for example, a trip to visit my family in Florida when my oldest was about 6 months old. My husband went down to the dock in my parents' neighborhood to do some fishing with my younger brother and sister. All was well, but my husband wasn't having too much luck catching anything good. After I while, I walked down to meet them with the baby in the stroller. I wanted to do a little fishing as well, so my husband handed the pole over so I could try for a bit.

On my very first try, I swung the pole backwards, and as I began to cast I felt some resistance. Thinking I hooked someone or something, I stopped midway through. As I look above my head, I see my husband's digital camera flying through the air, attached snugly to my hook. I tried to stop it, but it still managed to get a nice little dunk in the saltwater before I could get control. Saltwater is vicious, and that camera was immediately trashed.

Sounds pretty unlucky, right? (Sorry about your camera, honey.) Well, the upside is that we were able to save the memory card which had all of our pictures on it from the vacation up to that point. We managed to get a cheap camera the next day, on a good sale, too!

That is just one example of many stories I have regarding the odd luck we seem to have together. It's really like something out of a comedy. I've even had people tell me that we need to have a TV show about us. You just can't write this stuff, people.

I wonder though, was it my good luck that brought my husband and I together, or did that tragically unlucky guy just get a break for once?

This is too funny! I think my coworker is cursed. Things are always happening to him and his wife!

You two probably look at each other a lot and say "this could only happen to us."
