Picnics for Dinner

Psst! Have you seen my live giveaway here?

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

Thursday night is Softball Night here. Our friends are on a men's softball team, and we go and watch and cheer for them each week. My husband subs for them whenever they need someone, so he especially likes to be there just in case they need him. So Thursdays we'll grab Sonic or Subway, or something else that's fast, but not "fast food."

Today, out of the blue, I thought it would be nice to have a picnic in the park before the game. Since the game didn't start until 8:30pm, we had plenty of time. I needed to make dinner out of whatever I had on hand, so I went with the Lentil and Rice Burritos from one of my favorite recipe blogs, Cooking During Stolen Moments. I had to make a few small changes to fit with what I had on hand, but they were awesome. I made enough for the 3 of us, stuck them in a container, and then into a thermal bag. I also whipped up a small salad for myself and some grapes and strawberries for dessert. Plates, napkins, forks, drinks, and then we were off to the park.

I would really love to do picnics once a week if I could. My only problem would be coming up with enough picnic-friendly dinner recipe. My husband is not into potato or pasta salad, so that's out. Which leads me to my question for today:

What is a good non-traditional picnic food?

I look forward to reading your answers, and check out more Aloha Friday at An Island Life!

Non traditional? Hummm. Kielbasi and saurkraut. Unless you're polish, I think that would be non traditional. (I'm so hungry now)

Quinoa salad or pilaf are good because they are great cold.

We make yummy wraps with deli turkey, napa cabbage, bell pepper, cilantro, and peanut sauce...all rolled up in a tortilla. Are you a vegetarian (I wondered from the lentil recipe)...if so leave out the turkey and it would still be yummy! That lentil burrito recipe looks delicious, and I've bookmarked it to try sometime soon!

I love to make wraps. I put just about anything in them from ham, chicken to bologna for the kids. Then I add ranch, lettuce, tomato.. you get the idea.

I usually pack chicken, not very untraditional, but it was all I could think of. I haven't gone on a pic nic in ages!

I like the pizza idea!

What about a cucumber salad? Yum now you got me craving some fresh fruit. LOL

How about cold fried chicken? Today, after a hot, humid, day, we had tomato, cheese, and cucumber sandwiches and corn-on-the-cob . . . simple and cool!

I am not a picnic-ker at all. I am more of a-get-my-husband-to-cook-on-the-grill-type of girl! But it is a great question.

Thanks for stopping by my site. I have never had Cuban food but I think I would like it!

Stop by again when you can. I am starting a meme called "5 Things Friday" so come by next week and play. Blessings.

I like wraps instead of traditional sandwiches!

Cold rice salads are good too. I've got a few on my blog.

All I can think of really is corned beef sandwiches.

We don't go on many picnics so it's hard to come up with something.

I think a good non-mayo pasta salad would be good. One that has lots of artichokes & olives and stuff. I post a recipe on my blog not too long ago with a spinach pesto sauce. It was YUMMY!

There are some casseroles you can eat cold like the rice krispy one i make :)

Cucumber salad. I wouldn't think that's typical...but still picnic-able and yummy!!

My family liked to eat fried chicken on picnics, which I hear is unconventional for other people!

Peanut butter and jelly is pretty much the only picnic we pack around here!
