We're still working on trying to get our belongings replaced. My husband went into the leasing office and asked for the manager's phone number, and after throwing the word "lawyer" out there, she showed up to talk to him. She didn't seem to think that the company is at fault, and the regional manager just happened to be there to talk to him as well. She agreed to pay for just the mattress, which I will not accept.
Yes the crib was a hand-me-down, but the fact of the matter is that we now have no crib. My 7 month old child is still sleeping in a bassinet because he has no crib.
So yeah, we're still working on that. But it's gets better!
Monday, my dishwasher decided to stop working. And then, under my sink I found evidence of a rat. EW! Tuesday morning my husband calls the leasing office to tell them about the two problems. Tuesday goes by and no one shows up.
Wednesday a maintenance worker comes by to check out the dishwasher. Turns out, our rat chewed through some hoses. Then he tells me, get this, that the exterminator only comes on Tuesdays, so he can't fix it until then. Now normally I am extremely down-to-earth, go-with-no-flow, non-confrontational. But I look at him and say, "So, you're telling me that we just have to deal with it. Until Tuesday." He mumbles something about talking to "them" and that he'll be back.
Fast forward to today, he finally comes back and attempts to fix the dishwasher, but the rat chewed on quite a few different parts. (GROSS.) He magically has some rat traps that he puts under the sink and dishwasher. Says "they" will probably just get us a new dishwasher, but we have to get the rat first.
So now I wait. I'm waiting to find a rat stuck in a tray full of sticky stuff under my sink. My stomach is turning just typing that. Our lease ends August 13th. I keep telling myself, only two more weeks in this hole and then we're free.
I think I may need to contact the local newspaper. This has turned into a real night mare for me and I think people should know about it before they move in.
So, what's your worst apartment/house story?
I look forward to reading your answers, and check out more Aloha Friday at An Island Life!

I can relate. We had mice that chewed through a hose in our dishwasher (apparently to get water). YUCK YUCK YUCK. (I prefer to call them mice instead of rats - just makes me feel better :)
The worst was when my ceiling collapsed two years ago from water damage to the roof. I had to have the entire roof replaced.
Hi Angela.
Pretty much any time I've rented kind of stunk. It's nice to own.

Sounds like you definitely need to get out of there.
When we lived in TX, the apartments always had huge roaches. They would just move from apt to apt. The exterminator visited us once a month to keep the population down. disgusting for sure.
Um, the worst experience I've had in an apartment was when the couple above my husband and I would blast their techno music late at night and have domestic spats. We continuously had to call the police as the man was screaming and yelling at the woman and their small child around 2 or 3 in the morning. THEN, they started smoking weed in their apartment. Ugh! I couldn't wait to get away from them.
That's awful. In college I lived in a house with 9 other people in Santa Barbara. We lived out in the field so there were insects and rodents all over. Not to mention our cat Sheba would drop a bloody gift for us every now and then. Dirty dishes, thin walls...it would take me an hour to write it all down. Ah...the stories I could tell of that house and my ex-roommates. I can't believe I lived like that. Glad you only have 2 more weeks.
I don't have any horror stories about the apartment itself but I once lived in a pretty slummy area. We use to hear guns go off and both my hubby and I's cars got vandalized more than once.
Ugh, so sorry that you are dealing with all of this. When we had our apartment we heard noises in the wall and above us. The neighbors upstairs had rice and there were mice in their apartment that I could hear. The only other bad thing was each summer we would get little ants up through the plumbing all over the apartment. The summer I was pregnant they REFUSED to do anything about it and I even said I would move out. I was so stressed out from the nasty ants.
I went away for a couple years on a church mission and my first apartment was later condemned. It looked like it should have been condemned years ago and had many unwelcome critters that we killed frequently.
I just have nothing that even comes close to this! I am so sorry!
And yes, I would call the media!!!!
So happy that you are getting out of there soon - what a horrible environment for you. Fingers crossed that you are moving to a great place with no hassle upcoming.
I have no story like you and other comments have.
I have always had fine houses but terrible roommates. I am living with my mom because I just can't catch a break with roommates.
Oh man... I don't have a horrible housing story, actually... I have too many to recount here because I used to lease apartments back in the day and after that was a real estate agent for 4 years (before the economy turned).
Anyhoo... I went back to read your other posts, do you happen to have renters insurance? If you do that should cover some of your losses. If you don't have renters insurance, get some. It will save you lots of money if anything should ever happen in the future. What if it had been a flood, or a fire, or robbery?
Your problems unfortunately are pretty common for renters. Managing companies sole purpose is to make money for the owner. So they ALWAYS put off as much maintenance as they can so that they can hand the owner a big check each month. That's how they keep their job. It's sort of the nature of the beast. I always felt bad for the people who lived where I worked because they would always get the short end of the stick. Luckily in most states the law favors the tenant, so if you DO go to court over this the case is most likely to go in your favor.
Best of luck to you!!! Hopefully you'll find a better place to live in a few weeks.
LOL, I got so wrapped up in your story that I forgot why I was HERE!
You WON my giveaway for the hand painted step stool! Toss me an email with your mailing info and I'll get it sent to you. :)
OH, that is a horror story. I've never had a horror story. We need to let the grass in our backyard die (and it just won't) so that we can relevel the whole thing, redo the sprinkler system and then replant grass. But that's not horrible, just a big project. I hope you find a better place.
Probably my worst is right where I am now. If I told anyone you wouldn't believe it. I know it would be condemned so I'll keep quiet until I can get in my house.
Good luck to you. Start packing up anything you can and tape up the boxes well. Pre-packing always makes me feel better about gettine out of a place if I don't like it. Plus, there will be less pressure those last couple of days. Those plastic tubs from a super store were one of the best investments we made. Anytime we move, we already have boxes. When you unpack, they all nest together and don't take up much space at all. Plus, they don't get chewed through like cardboard. Good luck and best wishes to you.
We have had many mice in our house over the years. They come in every fall and their is no stopping them with our basement. AS for bad apartments, just bad landlord once who was a royal pain in the butt. We never got our $600 security deposit back even after a good cleaning and repainting all the walls before moving out. The place was cleaner when we moved out than when we moved in and I still got stiffed. That was bad!
I could write a book on the worst landlord story. Well lets see things were never fixed on time. I had mold galore growing. When we were moving he changed the locks on us so we couldn't get our stuff out. Then the police had to be involved. He is lucky I didn't see him or I would have kicked his butt. LOL And that takes alot coming from me. I had to get a lawyer to get the rest of my stuff out. Well then after we move and we want to redo our mortgage he tells the mortgage company we owe him 2 thousand dollars. I said absolutley not there is no court hearing no nothing he is full of crap. Well he then proceeded to take us to court who then sent us through mediation. Well I had all the pictures and lets just say he lost! WE could have counter sued him for everything he did but I didn't have any fight left in me as he did enough damamge to our finances.
You know what you should do is contact consumer protection and file a complaint. They will help you get things resolved.
I haven't had any real major problems. However, my split ac is currently leaking water on my hardwood floors. They repair man is coming today. :-)
Oh holy cow hun. That's awful. I'm glad you only have 2 weeks left there. I've never had problems with the physical location of an apartment but man have I had some horrible roommate situations. I think currently I'm having the most issues with an apartment. We have termites that have infested. Luckily it doesn't really affect us directly.
In a previous apartment, our maintenance man stole our lock box, our identities, and withdrew all the money from our checking account. Needless to say we no longer reside there, good luck with your new place!
There was the time I lived in a 34 unit building an a tenant decided to set her bed on fire and put it in the hall to burn down the whole thing. YES ALL MY belongings were gone thank GOodness I was awake and we all got out safely.
I was on tv that am for a newscast letting them know how I jumped off my balcony with my child but lost my cat and car keys
The landlord who gave us 30 day notice and then wanted us at their beckon call to show the place to potential buyers.
hang in there. We are in the process of lease renewal. Housing issues are the pits!
Oh My what a nightmare !!!
I am so so sorry! but like you said only 11 days more and you are free from that hole!
I bet you are counting every second that goes by!
and that newspaper idea will be great totally great to alert the new people that moves in...
Ouch. That totally sucks. I don't have a nightmare...I guess that means mine is still to come.
